Exploring the Sacred Scriptures: The Role of Sacramental Books in Religious Traditions
Tumblr media
Sacramental books are essential in various religious traditions, guiding faith, morality, and spirituality. They transcend written words and are conduits of divine wisdom, connecting believers to their spiritual roots and fostering community. Understanding the significance of sacramental books is crucial for nurturing spirituality and unity across different faiths. Those seeking to deepen their understanding of Catholicism can buy Catholic Books Online in the UK to connect with their religious heritage.
Defining Sacramental Books
Sacramental books contain the text and directions for a particular faith's liturgy or official religious services. These books are considered sacred and hold significant importance within the religious community.
Sacramental books are essential for religious services, focusing on liturgical rituals and rituals of a religious tradition. Published by a church body, they carry the endorsement of the religious institution and are read and interpreted within faith communities. The text is experienced and enacted through liturgical rituals and ceremonies, making it essential for religious services. Sacramental books are necessary in various religions, influencing practices and beliefs. Examples include the Book of Common Prayer, The Sacrament of Penance and Religious Life in Golden Age Spain, Sacramental Poetics at the Dawn of Secularism, Christ as Sacrament and ExampleArticles of Religion are some examples.
Functions and Roles of Sacramental Books
Sacramental books are crucial in religious life, providing spiritual truths, guidelines, and moral principles for virtuous living. They are used in ceremonies, rituals, and worship services, uniting communities and strengthening religious identity through reading and study.
● Sacramental books are believed to contain divine wisdom and teachings that guide believers in living a virtuous life. The Nature and Functions of the Sacraments and Holy Wisdom, Or Directions for the Prayer of Contemplation, are examples of books that guide how to live a virtuous life. These books are considered timeless classics and are well worth studying.
● Sacramental books provide believers with moral principles and ethical codes. Sacramental Ethics: Paschal Identity and the Christian Life is an example of a book that explores how sacramental ethics provide believers with moral principles and ethical codes. This book deepens the Christian identity celebrated in worship and awakens readers to the significance of sacramental ethics.
● The reading and study of sacramental books bring communities together and strengthen their religious identity. The Catholic Book Publishing offers various books containing the official Rites' complete texts, including Communion of the Sick, Anointing and Viaticum, and the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults.
Sacramental books play a crucial role in religious life. They contain spiritual truths and guidelines for living a virtuous life. They are used in religious ceremonies, rituals, and worship services, provide believers with moral principles and ethical codes, and bring communities together and strengthen their religious identity.
Here are some of the best to buy sacraments books online in the UK:
● "Meeting Jesus in the Sacraments" is a book and series that helps students and readers recognise Jesus' living presence in the Seven Sacraments. The series reveals Jesus' presence in the Church and today's world with a teacher's manual and student text. Pope Francis emphasises that the sacraments are Jesus Christ's presence in us, achieved through the Church's celebration rites.
● Dr. Scott Hahn's book, "Swear to God: The Promise and Power of the Sacraments," explores the richness of Christ's sacraments, including doctrine, history, symbols, and rituals. Drawing on the Bible and Catholic Church teachings, the book extensively explains the Catholic sacraments and the meaning of covenants.
● Miracles R Us: Supernatural Miracles in the Catholic Church is a book that explores how God works with supernatural miracles in our day and age. The book contains real-life stories of spiritual and physical miracles from well-known priests, religious figures, and Catholic speakers. It aims to prove that God's love and power can transform hearts and lives.
● "Family of Families: Reflections on the Apostolic Exhortation 'Amoris Laetitia' of Pope Francis" is a collection of reflections on Pope Francis' 2016 Apostolic Exhortation, emphasising the value of marriage and the family. The book addresses challenges faced by families in the modern world and guides navigating them. The reflections in the book explore and expand upon the themes and teachings presented in Amoris Laetitia.

From the Church Fathers, [Catholic convert Scott] Hahn had learned that, for Passover, which launched the Israelites’ liberation from slavery in Egypt, the Jews not only sacrificed a lamb and sprinkled its blood on their doorposts as ransom, but they also had to eat the lamb. “That was not an option,” Hahn said. “If that’s true for the old [covenant], it’s not less so, but more true for the new [covenant]. Christ made those provisions and not only said, ‘My Flesh is true food and My Blood is true drink, whoever eats My Flesh and drinks My Blood remains in Me and I in Him ’ (John 6:55-56), but in the Upper Room, one year later, He really embodies that teaching by making the bread His Body and the wine His Blood. In reading all of this through the eyes of the Fathers, not only was I connecting the Old Testament and the New, but even more I was connecting the Passover and the Eucharist. The Eucharist as the Passover of the New Covenant is what illuminated the mystery of Good Friday.” Hahn understood that Christ’s Last Supper with the apostles on Holy Thursday is what transformed Good Friday from simply another Roman execution into a sacrament. “The Eucharist is where [Christ’s] sacrifice is initiated; Calvary is where the sacrifice is consummated,” he said. “On Easter Sunday [with Christ’s resurrection] that sacrifice becomes the sacrament, and when Christ ascends into heaven what He is offering in heaven is His glorified Body. What we receive and what we offer on earth in the Mass is the glorified Body of Christ.”
On Easter Sunday, the disciples on the road to Emmaus who don’t recognize Christ until He blesses, breaks and gives them bread after He has set their hearts on fire for the Scriptures by showing how they point to Him is Hahn’s own story. “Studying Scripture had led me to Eucharistic faith. Going to my first Mass is what led me to Eucharistic devotion. It was like, ‘Wow — that’s you, Lord!’” [Furthermore,] not only does Christ’s resurrection cause transubstantiation, so that bread and wine become Christ’s resurrected Body and Blood, Hahn explained, but it sets into motion what will eventually be the resurrection of our bodies. “When we receive Christ’s resurrected Body in Eucharist, the Risen Savior transforms our mortal flesh into His immortal flesh,” Hahn said. “I honestly believe that Catholics don’t recognize how amazing the grace is… It is what Saint John Paul II called ‘Eucharistic amazement.’ It is amazing how unamazed we are at what we profess.”

4 5 6 for ALL OF THE CaPri FANFICS
LKSJMDHGVLKSJ ALL OF THEM???
4: What’s your favorite line of dialogue? 5: What part was hardest to write? 6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?
Ink On Paper (tongue fic) 4. lmfaoooooooo there isn't a whole lot of dialogue in this one oop-
Laurent nodded. The wax softened as he pressed his hand into it, erasing his previous message. Soft, warm, melting under his touch. He wrote again, I need someone who is not afraid to read out the insults I make towards the idiots at court. You have been fired, Damianos.
i guess it technically counts lmfao. i just wanted to show laurent post-trauma still able to make jokes and snipe at his husband so it wasnt all doom and gloom 5. i'm not sure exactly what "hardest to write" here means because like... a lot of these fic have serious gore or otherwise upsetting content, but both emotionally and actually writing wise i find that kind of thing actually pretty easy to write hahahaha. i think i got stuck with the chronology and the decision to make it non-linear made it flow a lot better. for the record writing laurent getting raped and then having his tongue cut out was actually very easy to write, i think i got it out in basically one go. #cancelme the more fucked up and intense the easier i find to nyoom through it 6. my first ever fic in the capri fandom!!!! hehehehhehehe <333333 Level Of Concern (plan B fic) 4.
Before Nicaise could say anything, Laurent spat, “Does he know you had your first heat?”
SURPRISE nic was the one who was pregnant the whole time!!!!!!! 5. this one i banged out REALLY quickly so i cant think of anything here 6. capri omegaverse!!!!!!! i wish there was more of this 🥺🥺🥺 Like Me (what if Auguste was also abused fic) 4. ******CW INCEST MENTION CW ABUSE MENTION******
“Your brother’s stuck his dick in every single member of your family,” Auguste spat out, laughing, crying, and so miserable he thought his heart would stop. His voice rose again, and he felt something burst from him as he screamed for the whole world to hear, “Did you know that? Did you, huh papa? Did he fuck you too?”
dude this line is so fucked up lmfao but i enjoyed writing it so much. actually this entire scene where auguste is having his breakdown was really intense to write and im really pleased with how it came out OR
Auguste grabbed him suddenly, looking up into his grief-stricken face desperately. “Please, Laurent,” he pleaded, voice breaking. “Please. Don’t let him end up like me.”
i felt entirely too clever with this line lmfao. i was like ~ooooohhhhh title drop~ im so dumb 5. i just remember this one like. dragged on for some time. i couldnt figure out what to do with it, how to get everything to coalesce around the final reveal about auguste 6. plot twist!!!!!!! plus auguste angst. i really enjoyed this one, i wrote it after watching the movie Spotlight which is one of my all time faves Softly, Gently 4.
“My King has been overexerting himself again, I presume?” Paschal sighed, shaking his head with a fond smile. “When have I ever done that?” Laurent cocked his head to the side, a wry smile on his face.
hehehehe sassy laurent my beloved <33333 5. honestly im just going to skip this one from now on lskjghmvlksjhglkvsjhdl i just get "stuck" sometimes without rhyme or reason and its usually on boring stuff, but then i cant remember later. the hardest part for me is when my dumb fucking adhd brain wont let me focus on writing but once i overcome that its usually pretty smooth sailing 6. horny omegaverse.................... my beloved............... giving men vaginas for horny reasons my beloved......................... Water of Life (birth fic)
“Do you want to hold him?” Erasmus breathed, eyes glassy. The baby cried, Erasmus bouncing him tenderly in those sunkissed arms. He looked apologetic. “Only for a moment, it’s not quite over yet.” A playful smile danced on Erasmus’ lips, and he brushed away a slick, damp curl from the wailing baby’s head. “A head this big, he certainly takes after Exalted.”
a cute, fun lil line in the sea of horrible angst lmfao ORRRRRR
Erasmus knelt before Damen, before Laurent. He said, “Exalted… Can you command his Highness to push?” Damen froze. “Do you mean…?” Erasmus nodded. “Alpha command.” Damen’s expression crumpled. He said, in a voice that shattered Erasmus’ heart, “I can’t. I can’t do that to him.” Erasmus licked his lips. “Exalted, in this state, he can’t push. His contractions are weaker. He’ll-” “I can’t,” Damen cried, clinging to Laurent’s limp body like a lifeline. “He’d… He’d never forgive me.”
damen is so sweet........ he loves laurent so much...... ORRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
He stopped at the doorframe, turning to face Laurent with tears in his eyes, and whispered, “How long does it take, your Highness?” Laurent, shocked enough to respond, hissed, “What?” “I still wake up in the middle of the night thinking of it,” Erasmus said, voice thick in his throat, tears burning at his eyes. “How long until it’s over?”
real sad hours if u up click like. i love erasmus and laurent bonding over their shared trauma <33333333333333333333 laurent and erasmus friendship propaganda 24-fucking-7 bay bee!!!!! 6. unironically this is one of my fav fic ive ever written skdljmfhgvlksjdhflmgkvjshldkjfghvmls call the midwife is one of my favorite shows and writing this made me look at birth as something visceral and possibly horrible and traumatic. i wanna write more fucked up birth scenes, SO MANY MORE. ridley scott knew what he was doing Sandalwood (erasmus/kallias my sweet boys i love u so much) 4.
“I do,” Erasmus breathes, ducking his head, flushed as though embarrassed. “In the gardens, the perfume from the orange trees all around us on those summer nights.” Kallias smiles behind him – Erasmus knows his body so intimately he can feel it in how Kallias’ posture changes, though he can’t see the soft turn of his lips. “The scent was so cloying I thought it would drive me mad. It made me want to kiss you senseless.” Erasmus laughs, breathlessly, imagining the warm heat of Kallias’ mouth against his. “Don’t blame that on the orange trees, dear one.”
beloved..................... im weeping.......... 6. these two make me fuckign CRY ON THE REG I LOVE THEM SO MUCH MY SWEET BOYS YOU DESERVE THE WORLD- Wisps of Smoke******************* (lauguste fic) 4. ***CW EXPLICIT INCEST*** (i mean....... obviously lmfao)
“Call me what I like,” Auguste growled against his ear. “You know what I like.” He did. Laurent did. He knew everything Auguste liked – the slow flick of Laurent’s tongue on the underside of his cock, that tender spot behind his earlobe, the way Laurent’s thighs looked straddled atop him like his horse – and this. “Brother,” Laurent gasped, desperate, “Brother, please, harder. Harder.”
i wanted the incest to be explicitly part of the kink here lmfaoooooo 6. hehehehehehehhehehehhehe lauguste................... i need to write more of u But I Love It (laurent is allergic to latex fic) 4.
“Laurent,” Auguste said, voice high in warning. Laurent braced himself, stiffening visibly. With what seemed to be monumental effort, Auguste continued, “You know, Laurent. I’m proud of you.”
IM A SOFT BITCH OK???????????????? auguste is PROUD of his baby bro for overcoming his sexual trauma and getting that fat dick 6. SLJHVDLMKJDHGVLK PEOPLE FUCKING LOVED THIS FIC i tried to be funny and i think it worked. plus some softe bits thrown in. i also kind of see lots of humor fic where its a no abuse au, but i wanted to write something comedic where the regent still. existed u kno????? anyways hahahahha i dont think i can write anything like this again but im glad y'all liked it Is It Cold In The Water (slice of life fic) 4.
Laurent opens his mouth to say something cheeky, but instead, what comes out is: “Do you think Aimeric had the right idea?” Damen is quiet for so long, gaze serious and framed with his long, dark lashes, that Laurent wonders if he’d spoken aloud at all – and when he’s sure he had, he realizes Damen had remembered Aimeric after all. When he speaks again, the sleep is gone from his voice. “Laurent,” Damen says carefully, as though approaching a spooked horse, “Is something wrong?”
🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺 soft,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, 6. ruby likes this fic lskjdvhmflgksfjdhmvglkjsdhflkvgmjhlekjfhdvlgskjfhv im a SIMP- The Devil's Got Nothing On Me (AIMERIC FIC LEGGOOOO) 4. there are lots of lil nuggets in here!!!!
Aimeric blinks, and all he can think is, you knew? He says, "I – I just." "I am a patient man," Guion breathes, "I support everyone in my household. Everyone. But Aimeric, you are truly testing my patience. Your mother came to me in tears, begging me to find you. Look at what you did to her! There was nothing I could say until we found you!" "I'm sorry," Aimeric whispers, looking at Loyse, "I'm-" "Look at me," Guion roars.
this conversation was inspired by a very miserable encounter with my boss lmfao. fuck that guy and fuck guion
The regent, blue eyes sparkling - and Aimeric has never thought eyes could look just like a summer sky until now - says to Guion but really to Aimeric, "I was thinking I could take little Aimeric riding tomorrow. Just the two of us." Loyse says, before Guion can speak, voice trembling with relief, "I think that's a wonderful idea, your Highness."
~dramatic irony~ lmfaoooooooooo. WE know of course that this is a bad thing, but it's always fun to have characters make bad choices that they have no idea are bad. i also did this briefly in "Like Me" with auguste's ex wife taking nicaise to church because she was so overwhelmed at home and he offered to help. of course, the regent is always happy to help out. evil evil evil
"-was worried it might be difficult for him." A soft, lilting laugh. The guards had said the regent was in the library, and then there is Guion, right there with him. Aimeric is suddenly angry, not sure why his father is with the regent, who is his and no one else's. The regent responds, "I daresay it's been perfectly easy. It seems you've done most of the work already."
i wanted to highlight the fact that it was aimeric's neglect that lead him to the regent in the first place. hence "youve done most of the work already" - guion by ignoring and neglecting aimeric created the perfect environment for the regent to sweep in and take advantage. like leaving food out btwn 40-140 F is a perfect breeding ground for bacteria LOL. the books touch on that but i wanted to make it explicit
He is so, so ashamed. It's unbearable, the thought of her kind eyes, the way she cried for him, the way he pushed her away. Before he'd left to join the prince's guard, she had taken his hand, kissed it, and said in a voice fragile as glass, "It's been such a long time since I've seen you smile like that," but in that moment he could think only of the regent's letter warm in his pocket.
6. honestly i know ive sounded super conceited this whole time but i kind of tear up whenever i read through the end of the fic lmfao. aimeric is just so fucking depressing as a character and i love that i really got to explore that in this fic. he really didnt have anyone, did he????? he's like a tragic greek character where you just watch him stumbling towards his inevitable end and it hurts the whole time. its even worse on the reread ANYWAYYYYYYY thats it. thanks so much for the ask anon!!!!!!! feel free to send me more!!!

PokeSpe English fancast!
These are the voices I usually try to imagine in my head whenever I read the manga! Some of these I came up with myself, others I just accepted after looking up videos of the same topic on YouTube. I also know most, if not all of these castings would be impossible, since some of the listed actors have aged out of the roles and others would not conceivably work for an anime.
Try these out whenever you next read the manga! And if you have any suggestions for voices you think fit better, feel free to tell me about it!
(Long post, so it’s under the cut!)
Red (Gen 1-2): Veronica Taylor (Original Ash Ketchum)
- Since they start out pretty similarly and are counterparts anyways, why not?
Red (Gen 3+): Bryce Papenbrook (Origins Red)
- I’m not a hardcore fan of the guy’s work, but he fits well enough and is easy to recall!
Blue (Gen 1-2): James Cathcart (Gary Oak)
- He definitely isn’t the best choice for his more edgy counterpart, so any generic shonen rival voice would also be just as good!
Blue (Gen 3+): Johnny Bosch (Origins Brock)
- Taken off a YouTube suggestion, I think this one’s pretty fitting!
Green (Gen 1-2): Tara Strong (Kitten Walker- Teen Titans)
- I think this one fits very well with Green’s cheeky and flirty personality!
Green (Gen 3+): Michelle Knotz (May- Pokemon AG)
- I feel Green could keep Tara Strong as her voice actress throughout, but I included this for equality in case anyone wanted to see!
Yellow: Laura Bailey (Maka Albarn- Soul Eater)
- Another YouTube suggestion which really impressed me! Laura has a lot of range, which is needed to play Yellow!
Gold (Gen 2-3): Maddie Blaustein (AJ- Pokemon episode 8)
- While his accent was a bit much, I like him as a spunky counterpart to Ash! Any better versions of a similar character would be appreciated!
EDIT: Now that I think about it, Ben Schwartz would actually be a good choice for Gold!
Gold (Gen 4+): Scott McCord (Dan Kuso- Bakugan)
- (YouTube suggestion) There’s probably many other voices that’d fit here too!
Silver: Julian Rebolledo (Paul- Pokemon DP)
- Any super-edgy anime guy would fit (I saw Sasuke as one suggestion and agreed), but I’m going with the closest existing Pokemon comparison!
Crystal: Janice Kawaye (XJ9, Ami Onuki, etc)
- I think Janice’s peppy voice and strong “voice of reason” tone would be perfect for Crystal!
Ruby (Gen 3): Scott Menville (Robin- Teen Titans)
- Scott’s capability of playing both a campy loon (Er... thanks, TTG?) and a young badass was what really motivated me to choose him!
Ruby (Gen 6+): Todd Haberkorn (Hikaru- Ouran Host Club)
- While I still think Scott could voice Ruby all the way, the many occurrences of Todd on other people’s list and the voice clips they provided convinced me to begrudgingly put him here for his sheer skill.
Sapphire: Carolyn Richards (Sandy Cheeks, Cindy Vortex, etc)
- I think she would pull off Sapphire’s tough attitude, southern (?) accent and semi-tsundere nature based on the two roles listed above!
Emerald: Tara Strong (Ben Tennyson- Ben 10)
- Maybe I’m biased because he also has the green and #10 motif, but I think Ben 10′s voice would be a perfect for a spunky little kid like Emerald! I don’t think most usual anime dub voices would fit him very well otherwise...
Diamond: Zach Eisen (Avatar Aang)
- For a pure boi like Diamond, I think he’d 100% need an actual kid actor voicing him. And for ease of imagination, the rest of the Sinnoh Trio’s voices will also line up with the Gaang’s, because they actually fit quite well!
Pearl: Jack DeSena (Sokka)
- Barry’s voice also fits really well since the two are almost identical characters, but this works pretty well, too!
Platinum: Mae Whitman (Katara, many other roles)
- I think Mae Whitman’s impressive repertoire of wise and strong girl characters speaks for itself. For more anime-oriented folks, I’ve also seen the great Christina Vee on other people’s suggestions!
Black: Michael Reisz (Takuya- Digimon Frontier)
- For the longest time I imagined Black played by Yuri Lowenthal, but when I saw Michael’s voice clips from a YouTube suggestion, they immediately won me over!
White: “Miss Paradox Space” (White, PokeSpe BW Fandub)
- While certainly not the most professional actress on this list, hearing her in the YouTube fandub series for the manga was a great pleasure! She has a very unique voice that fits the role very well! If you know a similar and better actress, make sure to tell me about her!
Blake: Yuri Lowenthal (Sasuke Uchiha, teen Ben Tennyson, Mercury Black, etc)
- Similar to Scott Menville as Ruby but more adult, Yuri has the range of playing both a badass and a dweeb (for Blake’s campy playboy facade.)
Whitley: Haven Paschall (Serena- Pokemon XY)
- Haven’s amazing skill at conveying “sweet anime girl experiencing despair” was what led me to choose her for this role!
X: Mike Erwin (Speedy- Teen Titans)
- I know there are many roles that fit better than this, so let me hear them! Personally I never liked that X and Y were aged down for the manga, so my choice here might be a bit biased.
Y: Ashley Johnson (Ellie- The Last of Us, many many other roles)
- One of the best tough girl voices for one of the toughest Dex Holders!
Sun: Jacob Hopkins (Original Gumball Watterson)
- It was super-tough deciding whether or not to give Sun a kid actor or not (I was dead-set on Ben Schwartz for a while) but I think this probably fits? Gumball’s personality of a well-meaning kid with a slightly askew moral compass should work well for Sun! Any better suggestions?
Moon: Kimiko Glenn (Peni Parker, Lena DeSpell, etc)
- Kimiko’s voice really fits a friendly and composed yet badass girl like Moon!

Text
Maintaining One’s Hope and Trust in the Lord through the Uncertainties of Life.
God provides hope to the broken hearted. In life, we all experience trials and tribulations. We all have good moments and bad moments. Some people have more good than bad, and some have more bad than good. Why I don't know, but I do know that God is present through it all, and he won't give us anything that we won't be able to handle without his help.
"Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight."(Prov 3:5-6)
Wounds are very real in every individual’s life. I have many of them as I am sure all of you do as well. What's important though is not that we have these wounds, but rather what we do with them. Do we allow the wounds to stop us from pursuing the truth and living life for our creator, or do we choose to unite our wounds to the wounds of the Christ and say as he said on the cross, "Into your hands I commend my spirit."
I honestly don't know what I am going to do after this volunteer year, and I am unsure of what God's plan for me is, but I do know that he has one for me as well as for each and every one of you. We may not know what it is, but I know that God has a special purpose for each and every one of his beloved children. A purpose that only that child of God can fulfill. Some people may be asked to do things for many people and others may be asked to do things for just a specific set of people or maybe even just one specific person, but each and every task is important to the Lord.
The opportunity that I have to be present to the homeless population is a gift that not everyone may have, but the opportunity that you have to be a witness to your grandma, your sister, your parents, your friends, your patients/clients/customers, or whoever you work with on a daily bases is a gift unique to you to be nourished and cherished. If you don't reach them, then who will?
I am praying for you all as we get ready to celebrate the resurrection of our Lord and savior Jesus Christ. Know that you are loved, God has a plan for you, and that despite all of our wounds, God still wants to use us.
I invite you all in a special way at this Easter mass to give God permission to enter into your heart. Unite your wounds with his on the cross of Calvary. Repeat his glorious words that he said in the Agony of the Garden, "Not my will but your will be done." God has a plan for you. Trust in him with all your heart, live in the present moment, and take it one day at a time.
And always remember: God loves you and there is nothing you can do about it!
Your Brother in Christ,
 Scott

The Sisters Who Pulled a Prank and Accidentally Started a Religion
Tumblr media
Every other Wednesday in Fads!Crazes!Panics!, Luke T. Harrington looks at one of the random obsessions to have gripped the public mind in the recent past, and tries, in vain, to make sense of it all.
Beloved, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, for many false prophets have gone out into the world. —1 John 4:1
In 1848, two sisters were living with their parents in Hydesville, New York. The fact that the place was named “Hydesville” was probably already creepy enough, but their house had a reputation for being haunted as well. The sisters reacted to these rumors of a haunted house the same way any young girls would: by starting some trouble.
For Kate (age ten) and Maggie (age fourteen), the whole thing started as a harmless prank: After their parents put them to bed at night, they would tie apples on their fingers with string, and then bounce and roll the apples on the floor. I’m not 100% positive what an apple rolling on the floor sounds like, but apparently it’s really spooky, because their parents started to get awfully freaked out.
Having gotten their attention, Kate decided to take things to the next level, and began talking to the “spirit.” She challenged him to repeat the snaps of her fingers, which (surprise!) he did. She then began to ask him simple questions, like how old she and her sister were, which he would answer with a series of raps, counting up to their ages. From there, it wasn’t hard to work out a series of knocks for spelling things out, and soon the sisters were conducting full-blown séances. The entity eventually revealed himself to be the ghost of a peddler named Charles B. Rosna, who (he claimed) had been murdered and buried in the house’s cellar; excavation of the cellar failed to yield a body, and there was no evidence that anyone named “Charles B. Rosna” had ever existed anywhere, but that hardly seemed to bother the sisters or the people who wanted to believe them. The people of Hydesville were so committed to the idea that the sisters could speak to the dead that they picked a random resident, accused him of the murder, and ran him out of town. Which, justice, amirite?
Soon it became clear that an entirely new sect was breaking away from Quakerism—one that was less about talking to God and more about talking to, y’know, dead people.
Things were getting a little crazy at this point, so Maggie and Kate’s parents sent them to crash at their adult brother’s and sister’s houses, respectively. The mysterious rappings followed Maggie and Kate to these new locations, which probably should have clued people in that Charles B. Rosna was not actually haunting their parents’ home, and they were instead cracking their knuckles and kicking table legs, but of course it didn’t. While there, they attracted the attention of Amy and Isaac Post, a pair of radical Quakers, who were instantly convinced of the rappings’ authenticity and invited all of their Quaker friends to put down their oatmeal spoons and attend one of the girls’ séances. (Note: Yes, I know that Quaker Oatmeal has no association with actual Quakers. Something, something, cultural appropriation.) Soon it became clear that an entirely new sect was breaking away from Quakerism—one that was less about talking to God and more about talking to, y’know, dead people.
It wasn’t long before the Fox Sisters (now joined by their much-older sister Leah, who presumably served as the Curly to their Larry and Moe) were giving paid demonstrations of their abilities—not just in the revival-heavy Burned-over District, but in New York City itself, many of which were attended by the celebrities of the day. The sisters’ star was rising, and countless imitators were springing up all over the United States and Britain—because, when all you have to do to win fame and fortune is turn out the lights, say some spoopy stuff, and crack your knuckles a few times, well, a lot of people are going to want in on that.
Soon, Spiritualism—as it was now called—was a full-blown movement, with figures such as Cora L. V. Scott (whose claim to fame was that she could speak intelligently on many subjects, which apparently was enough to prove you were a medium for spirits in the nineteenth century) and Paschal Beverly Randolph (a noted proponent of “erotic alchemy,” whatever that is) joining the fray. All of them claimed the gift of speaking with spirits, and all of them—coincidentally, I’m sure—had show tickets and books to sell you.
It probably goes without saying that skeptics considered this stuff thoroughly debunked, basically from the word go. The first one to investigate the Fox Sisters, physician E. P. Longworthy, had them figured out just a couple years into their careers, observing that the rappings always seemed to come from beneath the girls’ feet or happen when their dresses were touching the table. A year after Longworthy, three investigators from the University of Buffalo proved that the noises didn’t happen if they made the girls sit on an upholstered couch with pillows under their feet. A year after that, patent examiner Charles Grafton Page demonstrated that simple noise-making machines could be built and concealed under nineteenth-century-style dresses, in case the girls ran out of joints to pop, I guess. Skeptics remained unconvinced by the copycat mediums as well.
If you’re expecting any of that to have changed the trajectory of the Spiritualist movement, though, you’re (of course) mistaken. There were just an awful lot of people who really wanted to talk to the dead, even if the dead were seemingly only good at rapping out Morse Code. It didn’t hurt that the dead also seemed consistently to be on the proverbial Right Side of History, frequently championing fashionable causes like abolition, women’s suffrage, and prohibition. (Two out of three ain’t bad.) It also didn’t hurt that two of the bloodiest wars in American history—the Civil War and World War I—were right around the corner, providing mediums with two huge waves of bereaved people looking for closure. Each of these waves was met with its share of skeptics—including, in the 1920s, Harry Houdini himself—but it was never enough to overcome the desire of believers to believe.
For their part, the Fox Sisters actually admitted the whole thing had been a hoax in their later lives. In 1888, Maggie and Kate took the stage in New York one last time to show how they’d been making the sounds for forty years. With doctors to present to confirm, Maggie demonstrated that pretty much the whole trick had consisted of—wait for it—cracking her toes.
Those determined to believe the claims of the Fox Sisters will point out that by this time in their lives they were all living in near-poverty and would have said pretty much anything for money; Maggie more-or-less confirmed this a year later by attempting to recant her previous confession, apparently due to financial pressure from the Spiritualist movement. Back in New York City, though, her own words against the movement had been pretty forceful: “I am here tonight as one of the founders of Spiritualism to denounce it as an absolute falsehood from beginning to end, as the flimsiest of superstitions, the most wicked blasphemy known to the world.”
Of course, forty years into the movement was probably too late to recant, if she had hoped to put an end to it. At its height, Spiritualism had eight million adherents globally, and while that number has dwindled to six figures since, I’m currently just a few minutes away from several Spiritualist congregations (I wonder what their Zoom services are like). I’m not sure if this sort of thing was what St. John had in mind when he admonished believers to “test the spirits,” but I’d say that verse doesn’t not apply here.
I, personally, am not a knee-jerking skeptic when it comes to all supernatural and paranormal claims—I probably couldn’t be a Christian if I were—but there is something to be said about having a healthy skepticism about them, especially when they’re what we already want to believe, and especially when there are much more obvious explanations.
And also to keep in mind that, if ghosts do exist, they’re probably up to something much cooler than tapping out answers to tedious questions.

While researching the post about George Mackay Brown I found this article about the poet's muse Stella Cartwright, who cast her spell on some of our greatest makars, the article tells us of some of their words they scribed about her........
"....Scott's anguished poem of midlife crisis and religious loss, 'The Paschal Candil', describes the woman who led him "Throu midlife's forests, whaur no licht wes leamand." Goodsir Smith celebrated Stella's power in verse, calling her "a lassie frae the mune". MacCaig gave her a witty four-line poem warning her not to put him on a pedestal. Mackay Brown wrote Stella a birthday poem every year for the rest of her life."
“You placed me on a pedestal
 according to my lights
but what you didn’t know, my dear
I have no head for heights.”
Norman MacCaig.
I can only find the one photo of this "muse" online, I can relate to her sad story having had an ex who had her fair share of admirers during a tormented alcohol fuelled life, and passed away due to those excesses. Please read the article about her here. http://www.scotsman.com/lifestyle/under-the-rose-stella-cartwright-1-1431320

Woodbury Lions Club hosting American Red Cross blood drives
Tumblr media
vimeo
Blood Drives in Cannon County for over 60 years.
It has been said that the Lions Club drives are the best in the Tennessee Valley Region Blood Services area, which includes all of Tennessee, parts of Kentucky, and Alabama.
The extra effort put forth by the Lions Club has little to do with it. The Woodbury Lions Club has a committee of members that work together to help insure that everything runs smoothly, along with community volunteers who like to help out.
Some of the volunteers have more experience working with blood drives that the actual Red Cross staff who go out daily working with blood drives within the area.
Committee chairmen’s Patsy and Carl Hirlston and Bobby Bogard with committee members Ken and Artie Jean McIntyre, Lois Larimer, Clyde Thomas, Nolan Northcutt, Robert Jennings, Charlie Brown, Clyde and Kitty Bush, Chris Brushaber, Danny Miller, Cliff Swoape, Andy Jacobs, Doug Combs, and Gina Mitchell, all work together along with community volunteers of Bessie Miller, Orval and Esther Gray, Juanita Burks, Cathey Parker, Betty Harder, Shirley Borren, Jane Jennings, Grace Young, Nile Young, Della Young, Robert Young, Kay Campbell, Carol Davenport, Bobbie Henline, Jim Henline, Betty Paschal, Ann Todd, Mary Sue Vinson, and Mary Nelle Hillis too create a professional staff that assist members of the American Red Cross staff.
The Lions Club assigns a task of greeting donors and signing them in, handing out water and assigning donors with a number.
Copies of the Cannon Courier are provided for donors to read before or after their donation.
Red Cross provides snacks and the Woodbury Lions Club has additional snacks such as: a one-of-a-kind trail mix, peanut butter and crackers, baloney and crackers, and cheese and crackers.
A staff works in the canteen area who assist the donors after they have donated by getting them a drink of juice, water, soda, or coffee and then sitting with them and talking. They also watch the donor to see if the donors face color changes or if their arm starts bleeding from where the donor had given blood.
Woodbury Club also keeps records of each donation and awards donors with pins and Certificates when completing gallon donations. Along with taking pictures of donors receiving awards and being pinned with a gallon donation pin, plus having members of the Lions Club calling and reminding donors of upcoming blood drives also adds a little bit more to why Cannon County Blood Drives are better and produces more regular donors than other areas which has a larger population.
Woodbury Lions Club host six blood drives a year, always the third Thursday in January, March, May, July, September, and November. Each blood drive is noon until six pm except May’s drive, which runs from 9 am until 6 pm. May’s blood drive is a donor appreciation drive, and most of the businesses in Cannon County donate door prizes.
In the last five to six years, each donor was able to win three of four items because of the generosity of the businesses and their support of the Lions Club and wanting to reward the true everyday heroes of Cannon County, those who give of themselves to help save the lives of others. In most cases, they are saving the lives of people who they do not know.
On May 20th, 2010 the following businesses provided door prizes for the heroes of Cannon County: A Touch of Home Flower’s & Gifts, Arts Center of Cannon County, Auto Zone, Birdsong Adhesives, Boyd’s Garage, Briar Rose Flowers and Gifts, Bromley/Jennings Automotive, Cannon County Chiropractic, Cannon Market, Captain D’s, CareAll, Cell Plus, Coco Tan & Spa, Chilangoes Mexican Restaurant, Curves, Cutting Edge Hair Salon, D J’s Pizza and Steakhouse, Family Dentistry Deason & Bucher, Farm Bureau Insurance, First National Bank, Flower Occasions, Gina’s Boutique, Hardee’s, Hayes Bros Auto Care, Hibdon’s Body Shop, Higgins Car Wash, J P’s Fine Swine Bar-B-Que, Jennings Jewelers, Joe’s Place, Legendary Cuts, Lightwriters Photography, Lions Pizza Den, The Millennium Hair Salon, Moonlite Drive-In, NAPA, The Old Feed Store, One Stop Market, Parsley’s Market & Deli, Paul Reed’s Furniture, Paul’s Auto Service, Piggly Wiggly, Potter’s Ace Hardware, Quick Shop Market, Reed’s Building Supply, Regions Bank, Roger Hindman Body Shop, Scavenger Hunt Flea Market, Scavenger Hunt Trading Post, The Scoreboard, Shirt Shack, Shotgun County Pawn & Gun, Smitty Tire Shop, Stewart’s Printing, Stone Gait Tack and Feed, Subway, West End Tobacco Store, Woodbury Auto Express, Woodbury Insurance Agency, and Woodbury Lawn & Garden. Every donor and volunteer received a promotional ink pen from DTC, a pillbox from Middle Tennessee Electric Membership Cooperation, Chap Stick from FirstBank, a value meal card from Sonic, and a 3 pound bag of stone ground corn meal from The Readyville Mill.
The Red Cross also provided promotional items and the Woodbury Lions Club provided $10 gift certificates and a grand prize of $100 gift card.
It is very hard to find another community that has so many businesses that support a civic club as much as the ones in Cannon County.
Most all the businesses give support to the Woodbury Lions Club for sponsorship of the Lions Club Horse Show, White Cane donations, and door prizes for the donor appreciation Blood Drive. Without support from the local businesses, the Woodbury Lions Club would not be able to do as much as it does within the community, state, country, and world. Local businesses are one of the leading reasons why Cannon County Blood Drives are so much better that anywhere else in the state.
Another reason and probably the number one reason the blood drives are the best anywhere is the volume of regular donors in Cannon County. In any community only a certain per cent are eligible to donate and of that per cent only about 3 to 5 percent actually donates, but the donors in Cannon County has a much higher percent.
This is not due to the Lions Club and its part, nor the businesses and its part, but it is the individual donor and the way of life in Cannon County, the way most have been raised to want to help others in need in any way they can.
The mentality of the average person in Cannon County is to serve in any way they can. This mentality is one of the reasons Woodbury Lions Club is one of the largest clubs in the state.
It is why the businesses give as much as they do, and why so many volunteers do jobs within the county for little or no pay. The parents, schools and churches within the community teach the children from an early age of the importance of giving back to the community in which they live and the lesson that it is more blessed to give than to receive.
This is why Cannon County has had over 360 donors in the past 2-½ years. Woodbury Lions Club and the American Red Cross both use fiscal years that begin on 1 July and end 30 June.
The following is a list of local heroes who gave during the 2009-2010 fiscal year. Those donating Double Red Blood Cells count as two donations, the max number of times any one can give in a fiscal year in whole blood or double red cells is 6. The number that follows a persons name is the amount of pints given as of 30 June 2010.

The Woodbury Lions Club has received several awards of appreciation from the American Red Cross for their support of the Community Blood Program, and there is a lot of speculation as to why a small community does so well on the blood drives.
A lot of the credit is given to the Lions Club for putting out an extra effort.
Some credit is given for having good media coverage with the Cannon Courier, the Cannon Wire, and WBRY radio. Some credit is given for the support given by the businesses in Cannon County.
Any community can have a civic organization that puts forth the extra effort, and have good media and local businesses supporting them, but they don’t have the attitude and dedication of serving others that is instilled into Cannon Countians from birth until death.
The Woodbury Lions Club expresses heartfelt gratitude to all the media, businesses, and donors for exceeding the yearly goals set forth by the Red Cross based on past history.
It is so great to live among so many heroes. Likes: 7 Viewed:
